Josh Stout is a trombonist and music educator in Austin, TX. As a Graduate trombone student at the University of Texas at Austin, Josh regularly plays with the University’s top ensembles including the UT Wind Ensemble, the UT Symphony Orchestra, the Butler Opera Center Orchestra and the UT Trombone Choir. During recent performances with the Trombone Choir, he shared the stage with the legendary Joseph Alessi from the New York Philharmonic as well as David Garcia from the Zurich Opera Orchestra, and Brian Hecht from the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. As a member of the 2024 UT Wind Ensemble Josh performed in Carnegie Hall as part of the ensemble’s 50th Anniversary Celebration performance in June 2024.
An active performer, Josh has participated in many national and local competitions. Most recently, he was named the winner of the 2025 American Trombone Workshop Solo Competition Tenor III Division in Washington DC. Along with his Brass Quintet, “Burnt Orange Brass”, he was named a finalist in the 2025 Coltman Chamber Music Competition. He has also been a finalist in the 2024 UT Concerto Competition, a two time winner of the BYU Concerto competition, and was a Semifinalist in the Southeast Trombone Symposium Orchestral Excerpts Competition in 2020. Josh has been a recipient of multiple scholarships to summer Music Programs including the 2024 Northwestern Trombone Seminar with Michael Mulcahy, the 2024 Third Coast Trombone Retreat, and the 2022 Rafael Mendez Brass Institute in Denver, CO. He has been mentored by world-class trombonists such as Mark Davidson, John Lofton, Scott Hartman, Brad Edwards, and Richard Harris. He has shared the stage with artists such as Itzhak Perlman, Joseph Alessi, Brian Hecht, Caleb Hudson, David Garcia, Mary Bowden, Patrice Tipoki, and members of Canadian Brass and Summit Brass.
Josh has performed professionally in ensembles and orchestras throughout the greater Austin and Seattle areas as well as Salt Lake and Utah counties. He is also a former member of the Saratoga Orchestra of Whidbey Island and the Salt Lake Choral Artists Orchestra. Other orchestras he has performed with include Symphony of the Hills, Philharmonia Northwest, Utah Metropolitan Ballet Orchestra and Millennial Choirs and Orchestras.
In the education field, Josh is an active lesson teacher in the Austin area and teaches students on trombone and euphonium. He has taught lessons in-person and virtually throughout Texas, Washington, and Utah and has maintained an active private teaching studio since 2019. Josh's students have been admitted to top level music programs across the county including the Cleveland Conservatory of Music and the Butler School of Music at UT Austin. His High School students have been winners of All-state auditions, have ranked First Place in TMEA Region Auditions multiple years, have received superior ratings in Solo & Ensemble competitions, and have regularly placed in top concert and jazz ensembles in their schools.
Josh will be receiving his Master’s in Music degree from the University of Texas at Austin in May 2025 as a student of Dr. Nathaniel Brickens. Josh also received his Bachelor's Degree in Trombone Performance from Brigham Young University in 2020 where he studied with Dr. Will Kimball, Professor of Trombone, and Graeme Mutchler of the Utah Symphony. His other main teachers include Koichiro Yamamoto, Jeremy Marks and Darren Workman
Josh will be continuing his education in the fall of 2025 at UT Austin where he will be perusing a Doctorate of Musical Arts (DMA) degree under the tutelage of Dr. Nathaniel Brickens.
