Josh Stout, M.M.
Josh Stout is a trombonist and music educator based in Austin, TX. He is the Trombone Teaching Assistant at The University of Texas at Austin where he is currently pursuing his Doctorate of Musical Arts (DMA). In March 2025 Josh was named the winner of the American Trombone Workshop Solo Competition Tenor III Division. He is passionate about chamber music and is a founding member of the Burnt Orange Brass Quintet who recently placed in the Final round of the 2025 Coltman Chamber Music Competition.
An active freelance musician, Josh has performed with professional orchestras across the western United States including Texas, Washington and Utah. As a graduate music student at UT Austin, he regularly plays with the University’s top ensembles including the UT Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Trombone Choir, and the Butler Opera Center Orchestra. In June 2024 Josh performed in the legendary Carnegie Hall for the UT Wind Ensemble’s 50th Anniversary Celebration and has recently shared the stage with Joseph Alessi (New York Philharmonic), David Garcia (Zurich Opera Orchestra), and Brian Hecht (Dallas Symphony Orchestra) in performance with the UT Trombone Choir.
In the education field, Josh maintains a busy teaching schedule as a private lesson teacher in the Austin area and teaches students on trombone and euphonium. He has taught lessons in-person and virtually throughout Texas, Washington, and Utah since 2019. Josh's students have been admitted to top level music programs across the country including the Cleveland Conservatory of Music and the Butler School of Music at UT Austin. His High School students have been winners of All-state auditions, have ranked First Place in TMEA Region Auditions multiple years, have received superior ratings in Solo & Ensemble competitions, and have regularly placed in top concert and jazz ensembles in their schools.
As a solo performer, Josh has participated in many national and local competitions. He was a finalist in the 2024-2025 UT Concerto Competition, is a two-time winner of the BYU Concerto Competition (2018 & 2020), and was a Semifinalist in the Southeast Trombone Symposium Orchestral Excerpts Competition in 2020. Josh has studied with some of the nations finest trombonists at summer academies and programs across the United States including the 2024 Northwestern Trombone Seminar in Chicago, IL with Michael Mulcahy and the 2022 Rafael Mendez Brass Institute in Denver, CO.
Josh received his Master’s in Music degree from the University of Texas at Austin in May 2025 as a student of Dr. Nathaniel Brickens. Josh also received his Bachelor's Degree in Trombone Performance from Brigham Young University in 2020 where he studied with Dr. Will Kimball, Professor of Trombone, and Graeme Mutchler of the Utah Symphony. His other main teachers include Koichiro Yamamoto, Jeremy Marks and Darren Workman.
