Josh Stout, M.M.

Josh Stout will be joining the Tucson Symphony Orchestra in September 2026 as Principal

Trombone. A native of Austin, Texas, he was also recently appointed as Assistant

Principal/Utility Trombone of the Dallas Winds. Josh is a nationally recognized solo and

chamber artist and was the winner of the 2025 American Trombone Workshop Solo

Competition, Tenor III Division. He has been a finalist in the Coltman Chamber Music

Competition and is a founding member of the Sprezzatura Brass Quintet, who will be featured

artists at the 2026 Music in the Mountains Festival. Josh has toured with ensembles in Mexico,

Australia and the United States and has performed with professional orchestras across the US

including the Phoenix Symphony, the Austin Symphony Orchestra, and more.

A passionate educator, Josh previously served as the Teaching Assistant for the trombone

studio at The University of Texas at Austin (UT) and was the assistant conductor of the UT

Trombone Choir. He has maintained a busy teaching schedule with his private lesson studio

since 2019. Josh co-founded the South Austin Trombone Day with his wife, Sadie, an

accomplished trombonist and musician, as a summer workshop for middle and high school

trombonists. Josh's students have been admitted to top level music programs across the

country including the Cleveland Conservatory of Music and the University of Texas at Austin and

have earned honors in state, regional and local competitions.

Josh has been fortunate to study with some of the world's finest musicians at summer programs

including the Northwestern Trombone Seminar with Michael Mulcahy, the Third Coast Trombone

Retreat and the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute. He has shared the stage with top artists such as

Joseph Alessi, Caleb Hudson and Brian Hecht. In collaboration with Dr. Nathaniel Brickens,

Josh assisted in producing the UT Trombone Choir CD The Sword of Orion (2026) and can be

heard on several tracks. As a winner of multiple concerto competitions, he has also had the

opportunity to perform the Larsson Concertino and the Bourgeois Trombone Concerto with full

orchestra.

Josh has a Master of Music degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of

Music degree from Brigham Young University. His primary teachers have been Nathaniel

Brickens, Will Kimball, Graeme Mutchler, Koichiro Yamamoto, Jeremy Marks and Darren

Workman.
